Over at Sportsnet, they posted a quick video where Connor McDavid discusses his favourite moments from his NHL career so far and I thought it would be fun to discuss some of our own. Seeing as the guy is a human highlight reel and was only able to pick five moments from what has already been a sensational career, there’s no doubt that we can add to this list with a few more mind-melting moments that left us all speechless.
Since McDavid’s list featured some of the most well-known goals of his career, I wanted to look for a few that didn’t make the cut. That’s not to say that I don’t love all five of the plays that were his favourites as well, that goal against Columbus still gives me chills every time I see it, but I didn’t think it would be much fun to just agree with him and move on with my life. Instead, I spent the last two hours watching highlights from his first five seasons and picking some of the best moments as I saw it. After I wrap up my picks, I’d love for you guys to hit me up in the comments section with your favourite goals or moments from the first 351 games of McDavid’s career so far.
In no particular order, here’s my list…
THE HAT TRICK AGAINST CALGARY
While we had no idea how big of a disaster the 2018-19 season would end up being, Connor McDavid opened up the year like the rockstar that he is with a trio of ridiculous goals against the turds from Calgary. After making the playoffs for the first time in a century in 2017, McDavid kicked off the new season with a hat trick against the Flames and I don’t think that anyone could have been more excited where the team was going. Unfortunately, Peter Chiarelli had other plans.
FIVE POINT NIGHT AGAINST TAMPA
Call us spoiled or whatever you want to name it, but watching Connor McDavid put up five-point nights like the one against Tampa Bay is something that I’ll never get tired of watching. Not only does this highlight pack feature another ridiculous goal that saw him thread the needly on Vasilevskiy, but it also showed the different ways he’s able to hurt you which seems to be a neverending tickle trunk of new moves and dangles that give both goaltenders and defencemen fits.
IN TIGHT AND UPSTAIRS
When Connor scored this ridiculous goal on John Gibson, I remember laughing out loud by how he seems to be playing with entirely different tools than those that are available to the rest of the league. Despite falling down, he managed to maintain control of the puck, even pulled off a few dekes, and ended up roofing the puck on the short side when there looked like there was no room to get it done. I know I’ve said this before, but Connor McDavid seems to be playing with some kind of Game Genier or something because his puck skill are ridiculous.
HIS FIRST PLAYOFF GOAL
I’ll be the first to admit, there’s nothing overly special about this goal in terms of how it went in, in fact, I’d argue that Martin Jones probably should have had it, but the moment at which it came made this marker a special one for me. From the way he flew down the wing to the shot to the celebration that followed, Connor McDavid’s first playoff goal will always be one that I remember because it was kinda like watching Spiderman start to discover his powers. He was pumped, so were we, and I cannot wait to see him get more of these playoff goals in the future.
As Oilers fans, we’re used to seeing the opposition clutching and grabbing on Connor without ever having penalties called against them, but every now and then, he breaks through the crowd and makes everyone look stupid, which is exactly what he did in this goal against Philly. From the moment he left his own zone to the time when the puck crossed the goal line, McDavid battled through all kinds of clutching and grabbing before finishing off a play that we ended up memorializing on a t-shirt.
