The Detroit Red Wings have placed Justin Abdelkader on unconditional waivers in order to buyout his contract, the club announced Tuesday.

Abdelkader, 33, has spent his entire 13 year NHL career with the Red Wings after being drafted by the organization in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft.

He signed a seven-year, $4.25-m AAV deal with the Red Wings in 2015.

According to PuckPedia, the Red Wings will take salary cap hits for the next six seasons.
