The snow is flying and the Jets are back home… How much more hockey season can you get?

After a decent four game road trip to start the season in which they went 2-2-0, the Jets are finally back at Bell MTS Place to kick off the home portion of the 2019-20 season. They’ll get one game at home before heading right back out on the road for a quick trip to Chicago. But first, they get to deal with the Minnesota Wild who they didn’t manage a single win against last season.

Last Wild Game

The Wild started the game slow with two goals against in the first six minutes and while they did battle back to tie in the second period, they ultimately didn’t have an answer to contain Colorado’s top line as Minnesota fell to the Avalanche 4-2 in Denver.

Fun Wild Facts…

  • Minnesota has posted an all-time 95-64-30 record for the month of October, including a 36-20-10 record in the last six seasons – tied for fourth-fewest October losses in the NHL since 2013.
  • Minnesota has totaled 10 points in its two games this season (4-6=10), six of those points (2-4=6) have been collected by the defensemen.
  • Devan Dubnyk became the second goaltender in team history to play in 300-plus games (Niklas Backstrom is the other with 409 games played ) and the 15th active NHL goalie to play in 300-plus games with a single franchise.

What They’re Saying…

He was a liability during the 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators in the season opener, then was pretty much invisible in the 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche a couple of days later.

“I haven’t played good at all,” Zuccarello admitted. “It’s just making plays. I feel like I don’t see anyone out there. I don’t know. I’ve got to be better. I’ve been terrible.”

‘I’ve been terrible’: Wild winger Mats Zuccarello off to a slow start and knows it – TwinCities.com

Although Jason Zucker only has one point so far (a goal in the Predators game), he has certainly been noticeable on the ice. Against Nashville, the winger had an abundance of breakaways and point-blank chances, only cashing in on one of them. He also had great chances against the Colorado Avalanche but was unable to score.

Last Jets Game

They Jets got three goals from their very under-staffed and inexperienced defense to earn their first win in Pittsburgh since December of 2006 with a 4-1 victory over the Penguins.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • Winnipeg finished fourth in the NHL last season by going 25-11-4 at home.
  • Patrik Laine is averaging 1.25 assists per game to start the season, compared to his career average of 0.33 assists per game.
  • Winnipeg is 14-15-2 during the regular season when facing Minnesota since moving to Manitoba in 2011. The Jets though have lost their last six regular season games to Minnesota, including all five games last season.
  • Winnipeg is the only team in the NHL to post multiple wins when trailing first this season.
  • MILESTONE WATCH: Mathieu Perreault needs two points to reach 200 as a member of the Jets. Blake Wheeler needs one point to reach 700 for his NHL career.

What We’re Saying…

The important thing with Laine is that he’s also playing well without the puck. His defensive zone play looks better and he’s been really aggressive along the walls on the forecheck. If he can keep this up, he’s going to have a really good season as he rounds out his game.
