Let’s start off by saying that the Reverse Retro jerseys by Adidas are overwhelmingly good and this was a great project by the NHL to effectively grab our cash. Now let’s take a look at the Leafs jersey that leaves us wanting…

Now, that’s an unfortunate looking jersey. The fact that the Leafs use grey as a means to spice up their bland blue and white colour scheme points to one of the biggest problems with anything th Leafs will be able to accomplish. Secondly, the logo is a Leaf. Unless you are going to go away from it completely, it’s always going to be different shades of underwhelming.

In an attempt to mix some elements, like grey, the cool Ballard era jersey template, and one of the lesser know Leafs logos, we’ve wound up with something one of our writers suggests would be most likely found on the shelf at Walmart.

Here are some of their other thoughts:

Nick Richard: I hate this jersey so much. I really don’t have anything else to say about it.

Michael Mazzei: I don’t mind them using the 1967 Leaf on the front but they made a huge mistake by making the logo itself blue. It looks hideous as is and I think they really only needed to make one minor adjustment to make it look more tolerable…

Marsha Joseph:
Pros: it’s a new jersey, with the addition of a new colour
Cons: it’s meh

There wasn’t much opportunity with this thing to begin with, but I guess it’s ok. It could be the Islanders jersey… (the exact same core jersey with a darker blue, so basically no change at all)

(Editor’s note: Is there anything more Lou Lamoriello than his protest of putting out the exact same jersey they already have when fans across the league were begging for the return of the fisherman? No one hates fun more than that guy.)

Nick Barden: They did not make it “a nice looking jersey.”

Jon Steitzer: As for me, I was truly excited about something different, I was truly willing to accept bad, but the one thing I wasn’t willing to accept was boring, and this jersey is boring af.

A few options that could have spiced it up in my opinion:

  1. Go with silver instead of grey. That’s at least mildly more interesting.
  2. Swap out the Leafs patch on the shoulders for green St. Pats shamrocks, giving us a little bit more colour and something modestly more interesting.
  3. While the sleeves are great, something more interesting could have been done than the stripe at the bottom of the jersey. It’s what they had before, but it makes it look cheap. It would have been better with nothing there at all.
  4. Use the modern logo. While I’m not the biggest fan of it, I’ll pander to Leafs nation and go with the most popular logo.

So it is what it is, and we have to deal with it. I want to avoid complaining too much because I want the Leafs and the NHL to continue to throw new designs at us on a regular basis. Let’s make new jersey themes a regular thing in this league like they’ve been in baseball and basketball for a while.

A few of my ideas that would allow for the Leafs to be more interesting include.

  • Mascot logo jerseys. Let’s see the Leafs push out a polar bear logo jersey
  • City icon jerseys. Let’s get the CN tower on the jersey. Or backed up traffic on the Don Valley Parkway, both are equally iconic.
  • League swap jerseys. Let’s see the Leafs in Blue Jay or Raptor inspired jerseys. In short, give me a purple Leafs jersey with a dinosaur on it.

Really just give me any jersey that allows the Leafs to throw some of the traditional nonsense out the window. The Leafs are a team that has been pretty bad for over half a century, and maybe it’s time to stop pretending that preserving the tradition of this team is a good thing, but that’s part of a much larger conversation.

For now, these jerseys kinda suck.
