Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Tue. Dec. 6, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Not just for the goalies. I find the point streaks of Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson and Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner just as compelling. Robertson has a point in 18 straight games. While Marner is riding a franchise-best 19-game streak for Toronto.

What to watch for:

I’m a big fan of what Murray has done this season in Toronto. He’s implemented a few changes to his game – post integrations among them – while battling through a lengthy injury. Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning I liked his game but not the overtime goal. That’s a sore spot in Toronto.

I think Murray has been sharper with his movements without going overboard. He’s looked in control and his angles have been good. I also think Murray has looked more energized. He is playing some of the best hockey I’ve seen since his time in Pittsburgh. Murray is 5-1-2 on the season.

Oettinger started the season on fire and has only cooled slightly as his .917 save percentage suggests. But the 6-foot-5 netminder from Minnesota has had a few blowup games. Five times in 16 starts he’s allowed four or more goals. Oettinger was pulled Saturday against Minnesota after two periods of action. I’m anxious to see how he bounces back against a team like the Maple Leafs that can bury the puck.

Keep your eye on Roberston and Marner. Will either streak continue? Murray and Oettinger will play a major factor.

What fantasy owners should do:

Even though Dallas and Toronto can score, fantasy owners should start Murray and Oettinger. In all likelihood, one goalie is going to walk out of the building having played a great game. And hopefully the other netminder kept it close.

Bottom line for Matt Murray:

Get it done in regulation because the Leafs are brutal in overtime.

Bottom line for Jake Oettinger:

Turn it up for the home crowd in Dallas and grab a win.
