The Calgary Flames had a bad first period against the Edmonton Oilers. Then, they flipped the switch and seemed to figure things out. In an action-packed game, the Flames out-scored the Oilers 6-4 to capture two points in a big (Scotia NHL) North Division clash.

Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Milan Lucic

The Flames weren’t good in the first period. You know it. We know it. They know it. And the numbers reflected it: 17.52% xGF, 17-3 shots (overall), and 8-2 in scoring chances. Thankfully, Jacob Markstrom was in net.

After that blah opening 20 minutes, what was said and what adjustments were made? Turns out, the message in the Flames room was pretty simple.

We just said we needed to play better. Felt like we were on our heels a little too much. Maybe respecting them a little too much. Thankfully Marky came to play, especially in the first, and held them to two in that first period. But, you know once we started supporting each other coming up the ice and getting the puck in, started cycling them down low, we were able to establish our game and play on our toes, so I think that was probably the biggest difference.

Geoff Ward

The Flames didn’t really reinvent the wheel to get back into the game in the second period. Asked if the club just made simple adjustments after 20 or if anything bigger was going on, Ward indicated that simple adjustments were the key.

Just simple adjustments. Often times when you’ve been through a bit of a stretch like we have, you need some things, you got to be simple, and you need to get back to the work ethic and simple things in your game. I thought our guys did that and we were able to regroup and come out with a better second.
