Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
On this day in 1988, Laurie Boschman and Thomas Steen scored one goal and two assists each as the Winnipeg Jets beat the visiting Edmonton Oilers 6-4. It was game three of the Smythe Division semi-finals — a series that the Jets would lose 4-1 to the Oilers.
“A huge sense of relief,” said Jets’ centre Laurie Boschman, who had an empty net goal and two assists. “I didn’t think we were safe though until then. Two-goal lead with 33 seconds left.”
Steen’s goal came at the 9:44 mark of the first frame giving the Jets an early 2-0 lead, while Boschman’s goal came on an empty net to seal the win.
The game got ugly in the second period, with seven misconducts being handed out in the second period alone. One such penalty was handed out to Oilers’ Glenn Anderson, who got an attempt to injure penalty in the third period for swinging his stick at the head of Jet’s Steve Rooney.
